The Manikaran Temple's heritage

Manikaran is the subject of several Hindu and Sikh mythology and tales. In Sanskrit, the word “Mani” seems to refer to a rare jewel; this mythical Hindu story claims that’s how the name Mani originated.

Goddess Parvati traveled to this region of the globe with her spouse, Lord Shiva. Goddess Parvati misplaced her most prized gem, the mani. Shiva was furious when his troops failed to discover it and sent angry messengers back to hunt for it. Tandava began to visualize the devastating force of nature as a result. The diamond that Parvati had misplaced was eventually discovered by the snake god Sheshnaag.

When Sheshnag chose to take the jewel and conceal it beneath the soil, Lord Shiva became enraged. As a result, Sheshnag spewed hot water, which is still present in the area in the form of hot springs. Parvati’s “mani” vanished at that moment. The hot springs have been known to toss riches ever since. Before the 1905 earthquake occurrences, they were known to repeat the exact same action.

History of the Manikaran Gurudwara

According to legend, when Guru Nanak and his follower Mardana arrived, they were starving. He was urged by Nanak to build up a “Langar,” or food suitable for everybody. Mardana found food by going to the houses near to her. She proceeded to prepare Paratha. Nanak requested him to remove a stone from the location of a hot water spring so that he could prepare his meals. Mardana was instructed by his Guru to wrap the chapatis and submerge them in water. That’s when Mardana lowered it into the ocean. Then, Nanak instructed his disciples to ask God to bake the sunken chapattis so that their charity donations may feed the needy. The prayers were answered, making the city holy for people who are following the Sikh faith.
